One of the cruelest ironies of IF/RPL is that while experiencing one of the most unbelievably hard and stressful situations imaginable, you're surrounded by messages that that very same stress can be your undoing.
Don't stress, you won't get pregnant. Don't stress, you'll kill your baby. You better relax or this is all your fault. Why don't you just relax already?
And yeah, I get it. Stress is bad. It does bad things to your physical and mental health in lots of insidious ways. It plain makes you feel like shit. If you have the choice between being stressed and not, of course choose "not stressed." But it also creates a pretty big mindfuck for a gal in my situation. Part of me believes it, or at least is scared not too, and part of me finds the research directly linking stress to IF/RPL flimsy at best. Yet it's like this bitchy little monkey with its hands constantly tightening around my throat.
I feel the smallest inkling of stress. Which makes me worry. Which causes more stress. Which makes me worry more.Which makes me feel more stressed. And on and on, stress escalates, and it's harder to come back down the longer it takes me to get a grip.
Mostly I'm feeling like I've been managing it pretty well this past week, at least relative to past pregnancies. I'm on a steady diet of deep breaths and listening to my yoga/meditation music. I've kept myself heavily distracted by Net.Flix (we're on Season 3 of Mad Men, I know, I know...). Work is manageable. I'm getting myself out of the house and seeing friends. I can think of the pregnancy and what might be without instantly spiraling into a panic attack.
But then there's times like last night. Nothing special running through my thoughts besides the usual dull hum of the barely suppressed constant dialogue of "is this the one or merely our next miscarriage." But I could not get my body to relax. My heart was beating too fast, my breath felt tight, my stomach in knots. The more I tried to relax and failed, the more anxious I became. It started out as purely an uncomfortable physical feeling, but then the thoughts got going. Is this causing harm to my fragile little embryo? Or the real doozy, is this actually the restlessness that I often feel when my progesterone drops pre-period and pre-miscarriage, and my embryo is already dead? With the help of some back rubs from Mr. B. I finally relaxed enough to fall asleep, but *ping* woke up at 4am and the anxiety was back. I made the smart call to choose distraction over futile tossing and turning, and turned to crosswords and stand-up comedy shows on netflix for the next 2 hours until I finally fell back asleep. When I woke up a few hours later I fearfully checked my BBT and it was still high, somewhat reassuring me that my progesterone hadn't dropped, maybe everything was still okay. The physical anxious feeling seemed to be gone at any rate, thankfully.
In retrospect, Dr. B. upped the dose on my thyroid meds Thursday - maybe that caused the anxiousness? I also had somewhat salty spicy food for dinner last night - maybe it was just that?
Who knows. At any rate, I hate feeling like a ticking time bomb. That something can go wrong at any second. Or even worse, that I can cause something to go wrong just like that.
It doesn't help that I'm feeling disturbingly normal so far. Shouldn't I be nauseous? Shouldn't I be tired? Shouldn't I feel something?? Some recognizable sign that something is actually happening in my body?
The not knowing is maddening. The not knowing whether I should be on cloud nine or already working on Plan B.
Our next step is an ultrasound on Thursday. I haven't had a good date with the cooch cam since pregnancy #1 so the fear is already seeping in. But at least we'll know more.
Deep breaths. One day at a time. Zen zen zen zen....
(p.s. Thank you for all your support, again and again. I know pregnancy announcements, even in this community, even from an RPL-er, can be hard to take so don't feel bad if you need to stay away for a while. But since I've decided to keep this quiet from loved ones in real life for now, I'm so grateful to have this place to vent and spew my crazy and get it all out. So thank you, a million times thank you. xo.)
The anxiety is totally understandable, but it's a vicious cycle, isn't it? I hope Thursday will bring you some reassurance and maybe help to calm your nerves. In the meantime, just breathe.
ReplyDeleteAnd for the record, I will continue to follow and support you. You deserve your happy ending.
I can only imagine all the things running through your head. I have felt those feelings before, don't feel bad for it... just do what you can to get through the day ((hugs)) Best of luck with the Cooch-cam :)
ReplyDeleteI was an anxious wreck for the first several-plus weeks (and more than occasionally thereafter), and everything is fine so far - I know I'm just one case, but cling to that thought of the link between stress and harm as tenuous at best. You're not hurting anything, you're just having a perfectly normal reaction to early pregnancy after losses. You're doing all the right stuff - distract, distract, distract, and breathe deep whenever you can. When you can't, it's okay, it'll pass.
ReplyDelete(I didn't have any queasiness until close to eight weeks, nothing but slightly sore boobs up until that point...fatigue seemed to come around the same time as nausea. But I know what you mean - it would have been so reassuring to be puking and exhausted as early on as possible!)
Will be thinking of you - hang in there. Vent often if you like - we are here for you!
I hate the stress spiral of guilt. You'd have to be completely crazy not to be worried and stressed now after all you've been through. I think you have to just do whatever you can to get through this difficult time. Distraction is great, and the yoga/meditation stuff. I have to say the obligatory stuff about no symptoms being totally normal at this point, too. Hang in there.
ReplyDeleteI felt nothing until 6 to 7 weeks in. And boobs being sore for every pregnancy before made me feel especially doomed. I will also say that this bit happened during the most stressful period of the last 4 years. You are doing great and are allowed panic attacks every day or two given the tremendous hope that this represents. I will tell you too that the upping of meds will give you the same symptoms. I had a racing heart and insomnia at times at the first bump up of my dose. If it keeps up, it's worth asking Dr. B to back off between (like 88 from 100 or whatever).
ReplyDeleteYou are in my thoughts a lot right now and I'm here to listen anytime!
I don't really believe in the stress connection either, but the fear that you're stress-poisoning the baby is insidious. Big hugs.
ReplyDeleteRemember your other post? What will be, will be. There is nothing you can do to stop this from happening, or will it to happen with your mind. Sure, it's great to be happy and stress free, but I don't believe in the BS of your mind being held accountable for this biological event. Just continue to do your relaxation, and take care of yourself like you've been doing.
ReplyDeleteSeason three. Woman you are jamming through those. I think we are like season 4, episode 4 maybe? And we've started recording the current season on DVR. It's getting good, huh? :)
I am literally right here with you. I'm a complete mess this weekend. Sending you love and light.
ReplyDeleteOne of my RE's once told me that if stress could cause miscarriages there would be knocked up teenagers everywhere rejoicing. YOU and YOUR emotions will not harm this baby...cause I was a nut case when I was pregnant. And she seemed to turn out fine. I didn't feel anything until around 6 weeks I was vaguely nauseous. Deep breaths.
ReplyDeleteHello friend. I have been rooting for you, but unable to comment due to two little wiggle worms who inhibit my ability to type due to their amazing reach and dexterity. Speaking of those two, I didn't feel a thing at the beginning or middle or even really the end of my pregnancy. After all the shots, nerves, stress induced sick stomach feelings, etc. the one real pregnancy I had was blissfully uneventful! Maybe (hopefully!) it will be the same for you. Wish I could give you some pearls of wisdom on how to keep your shit together right now...the only thing that comes to mind is TURN OFF MAD MEN BECAUSE AS THE SEASONS GO ON IT BECOMES INFURIATING AND STRESSFUL!!! Ha! Please, please, please know you have hoards of Texans sending our best to you!!!
ReplyDeleteThinking of you and hoping your sanity is still intact.
ReplyDeleteHey Brightside--checking in and hope you're feeling ok
ReplyDeleteThis part is so hard. I also felt like I was on the knife's edge of a panic attack for weeks. I found an image that soothed me-- running water--and I downloaded an hour's long mp3 of a waterfall and I would lie there an listen to it and picture running water when I started to panic. And it helped.
ReplyDeleteThere's no rhyme or reason to when it works out and when it doesn't. And it always seems like it's not going to work...until it does.
